In-house, we troubleshoot any number of problems from software-related lockups and inconsistencies to virus removal and data recovery. We also build new systems from scratch, upgrade systems and transfer data. We do low-level data recovery and forensics. We field a lot of calls that require us to troubleshoot the problem and convince the caller to do business with us. A certain amount of time is required to hand-hold existing clients through sorting out problems with their systems. Multi-tasking is crucial to this type of work, in that the phone is ringing, people are coming in the door to drop off or pick up equipment and computers being worked-on need to be monitored. Compensation is a percentage of the amount billed and / or a percentage on parts or computers sold. The percentage varies based upon the skill-level of the tech.
In the field we handle everything from home computer troubleshooting (a large percentage of our business) to NT, 2000 and Novell server-centric systems troubleshooting and administration. A small percentage of our on-site work involves network wiring - both new and retrofit for homes and businesses. On-site work is paid at a percentage of the amount billed out. Attention to detail is crucial, as callbacks are handled by the person who originally went out on the job.
Hardware skills are crucial. Broken components are the responsibility of the tech who breaks them and time is money for all concerned.
All personnel are Independent Contractors and are responsible for their own taxes and health coverage.
New people coming in to our environment have to be able to hit the ground running and be able to think on their feet.
One other aspect of The Computer Wizard is that we collect old computer equipment, refurbish it and distribute it to needy families. To that end, all personnel help out and receive no compensation for their efforts, other than the personal satisfaction in helping out less fortunate members of our community. We have established a non-profit organization to facilitate this function.
We're always on the lookout for 'wizards'. By that I mean people who are capable of high-powered problem-solving linear thinking combined with the right-brain creative troubleshooting skills only true 'wizards' possess. We are not like any corporate IT department, where we can go back to a site and re-fix a problem we fixed before. We get one shot at solving any given problem and we can't afford to do call-backs.
The people who 'fit' our environment are quick-thinking, quick-witted non-geeks who are people-oriented, neat, professional types who like to see a job completed properly, like to have a certain degree of fun and like Pink Floyd (as well as all other types of Hard Rock, Country, Classic Rock, etc.) on the CD player in the office (no Rap or Hip-Hop is played or tolerated).
If all of this sounds interesting to you, call the office (972-781-0011) to arrange an interview.
PS: If you smoke, you won't represent The Computer Wizard. This is not negotiable.
We are currently hiring for a Field Service Tech and accepting resumes from qualified individuals.
